Why We Do...
"A place where all the children have the same scars."
All of us at the Crossroads Medical Outreach have been touched by children who have struggled with severe medical conditions. For some of us, we do the work to honor the memory of our children; for others, it is to celebrate their lives. For all of us, however, it is to provide a safe, fun camping experience for children who have nowhere else to go.
The Crossroads Medical Outreach has been under construction for nearly a decade now. With the birth of their son, Isaac, Barry and Maria Rudesill began to assemble a program for children who have life-threatening medical conditions. This project was initially called "Camp Animikii" which is Ojibwe for "Thunderbird" or "Eagle" and was designed as a Day Camp program based out of Madison, Wisconsin.
A Board was assembled, tax-exempt status was received and, plans began to build the programs. While the Board was committed to creating a program for children with medical conditions, it was decided that it was not the right time or place. And so the project was suspended.
In 2008, Barry Rudesill and the Director of the Northern Lakes Ministries, Michael Jewell, began discussing the possibility of expanding traditional camping programs to include children with disabilities. After a series of meetings, it was decided it was time to revive the project that began in 2001 under the auspices of the Northern Lakes Ministries.
To that end, Crossroads Medical Outreach was created, Day Camps are in the process of being planned and residential camping facilities are being designed which will allow children of all abilities to participate in traditional camp activities in a safe, secure environment. Not only that, but the goal is to run Family Camps that will allow families with children with life-threatening medical conditions to participate, as well.
The main goals for these programs are:
Please join us as we work to make this vision a reality.
